General Distribution Ideas

Tradeshows: Contractors, home improvement, banks, financing companies, home repair services distribute at home shows, industry tradeshows, fairs, etc. An inexpensive way to get your information in the hands of many people.

Gift to Valued Customers: Building supplies, lumber yards and supply businesses servicing contractors, electricians, plumbers, etc. all distribute carpenter pencils to their important customers. They take a box of pencils to be given to work crews at job sites. It is a valued gift and their advertising travels to many locations.

Point of Purchase: Hardware, paint & wallpaper stores, landscapers, all leave carpenter pencils at cash registers to give to customers. This is another item that is also re-sold for a nice profit and it carries the stores imprint.

Case Histories

# 1 - A bank was undergoing a major remodeling project and their customers had to walk through a designated work zone. When they got to the tellers they received a carpenter pencil imprinted with “We’re rebuilding for your future - Thanks for your patience.” The carpenter pencil fit in with the work being done and the customers received an unusual gift for the inconvenience. People were asking for additional pencils even after the construction was completed.

# 2 - An advertising firm used the carpenter pencil in a mailing asking clients, “Is your advertising a little flat? - We can help, call…” By using a different item and a slogan with a twist they created a unique self promotion. This was an unusual item and it gained a lot of attention for the firm. They deemed the mailing very successful and plan to repeat it in the future to new prospects.

# 3 - A heating and air conditioning company purchased carpenter pencils for their technicians to hand out to other contractors at job sites. At any given job site electricians, carpenters, plumbers, etc. would all be working together. This was a good opportunity to get their advertising in front of other professionals opening up conversations between them. Technicians often learned of upcoming jobs and received referrals from the people they met. The pencils helped open a door for networking.

School Children: Many of the pencils we sell are for distribution to children. They advertise against drug abuse, violence, drinking and driving or offer safety messages in case of fire, bus accidents, crossing the street, etc. Local businesses giving pencils to schools or children give a needed gift, and gets their advertising into the home.

Meetings/Seminars: Pencils are given to participants in meetings or seminars and can advertise a company’s quality policy, mission statement, commitment to safety or environment, etc. The message is a reminder many weeks later of the information received during the meeting.

Point of Purchase: Many businesses put pencils in containers near a check-out counter and either give them away or resell. Typically pencils that are resold tend to be a souvenir from a visit to museums, zoos, tourist attraction, etc. Grocery stores, restaurants, hardware, gas stations, hotels, etc., are among the businesses that give away pencils to their customers. Pencils are an inexpensive giveaway that are appreciated, used and the advertiser’s message visible for a long time.

Employee Use: Pencils are given to employees by management to distribute to customers. Consider real estate and insurance agents, banks, health clinics, accountants, hair salons, or government agencies. These are appreciated by the employee and the customer.

Information Slogans: Clubs and organizations use pencils to support their causes, look for volunteers or thank people for support. Distribution is often at community events, fairs, parades, picnics, etc., by such markets as fire departments, Lion or Rotary Clubs, VFW’s, Meals on Wheels, garden clubs, drug and alcohol treatments, teen programs, environmental agencies, etc.

Jumbo Pencils: (No ferrule, no eraser) This pencil is great for younger school aged children who are beginning to learn the aesthetics of writing. A great item to introduce children to the basic idea of recycling and how to help their community.

Mood Pencils:
(made from natural wood) This item changes color with the heat of your hands! Example slogans:
“Recycling makes a difference.”
“Make a change for your community - RECYCLE.”
This item is unique and different. It will get the message across in a fun and interesting way.

Politicians: An inexpensive item to support their message & platforms. Slogans include “The Write Choice”‘; Write Now - Vote for…’ Erase Taxes, Vote for…; Get the lead out and support…, etc. These are distributed door to door, at rallies, parades, used in mailings or given to campaign workers to distribute to friends and neighbors.

Case Histories

# 1 - Taco Bell and Pizza Hut imprinted their logos, the words “Now Hiring” and a central phone number to call for information. The pencils were distributed through local high schools where students seeking employment could call and be directed to the nearest location seeking applicants. Schools received a useful writing instrument and the fast food chains received many applicants. They were still being contacted for jobs months later, proving that their “help wanted ad” was still being read. This promotion has been copied by amusement parks, volunteer groups, and temp services.

# 2 - A wood treatment manufacturer ordered a sharpened, clear lacquer finish pencil to add to a mailing being sent to their retailers. Enclosed was a questionnaire that they asked the store to complete and return to them concerning their product. The response to their mailing was an astonishing 65%! A note here - the clear lacquer pencils is often the color choice for lumber yards, builders, and environmental agencies. The wood grain is enhanced by the clear lacquer giving a unique background to advertising imprints.

# 3 - A large department store was running a holiday promotion geared towards children during the month of December. They ordered pencils to be handed out during one of the weeks and 1000 pencils were sent to each of their 2500 locations. (Other items included balloons, crayons & coloring books.) Children that were shopping with their parents received a gift when entering the store. They were so happy with the response that they went a step farther and ordered additional pencils to be distributed to local orphanages, and needy school districts. Several stores received local news coverage for their generosity. The good will generated helped to increase their business when other stores were complaining of slow holiday sales.

# 4 - A bank took advantage of a Halloween party being thrown by a volunteer fire department. The fire department was throwing a party for children in an effort to promote a safer alternative to trick or treating. The bank donated Halloween pencils with the words “Have a Safe and Happy Halloween” and their name to the fire department to parents of the children. They created goodwill with the fire department volunteers and the parents of the children attending. Please note - parties like this are good opportunities for local businesses like banks, insurance companies, real estate, etc. to pass their messages to the communities. Volunteer organizations tend to have limited funds so help is always appreciated.

# 5 - Another Halloween promotion involved a hospital that was offering X-raying services of candy. To advertise this fact they purchased pencils and distributed them through the local elementary school. Students taking home the pencils made their parents aware of the service. Goodwill is again created through the donation of a needed school item, and the pencil became a reminder of the thoughtful service offered by the hospital.
