Selling Ideas by the Month
JANUARY
Upcoming holidays such as St. Patrick’s Day or Mardi Gras usually showcase large parades and celebrations, and are an excellent promotional opportunity for your clients. Consider wooden nickels, which could easily be thrown from floats and are light enough that they won’t hurt anyone. Retailers can offer discounts at stores, free drinks at coffee shops, bars, etc. Beer steins, stadium cups, magnets and writing instruments are popular items for restaurants and bars to hand out to crowds.
FEBRUARY
Consider contacting charity organizations for information on their races or events for the summer. Drinkware, flyers, pens and pencils, along with hats, T-shirts or sweatshirts are among the most popular items handed out by organizations. There are many bicycle races, walk-a-thons and foot races held throughout the summer all needing product to distribute to participants. Corporations that sponsor these events are usually looking for promotional products to hand out to their participating employees as well creating a team atmosphere!
MARCH
Spring promotions will be on the minds of many retailers. Rulers and yardsticks are good traffic builders at hardware and landscaping stores, as well as car and recreational dealers. Offer a free yardstick when $10.00 in merchandise is purchased, or simply hand them out at the front door as a courtesy during a spring promotion. Nurseries or Lawn and Garden shops could hand out rulers with planting information on the back side or create their own information for a yardstick.
APRIL
Proms and Graduations. Don’t think just high school and college graduations. Many pre-school and elementary schools hold their own celebrations. T-shirts, pencils, cups, key tags, etc. are given away to graduates from local businesses or organizations such as PTA’s, Banks, Insurance Agents, etc. Drinkware and key tags are the most popular giveaways for the prom events.
MAY
Summer events such as open houses, company picnics, re-unions or golf tournaments will be coming soon. Companies will want inexpensive giveaways for their employees and/or clients. Consider flyers, stadium cups, sports bottles, beer steins, yo-yo’s for the children or flyswatters for these events.
JUNE
Customers that plan to exhibit at county and state fairs should start considering their promotional needs. Due to visibility, yardsticks are a great traffic builder. People see them being carried around and will look for the booth to get their free yardstick too. Ovensticks are another favorite tradeshow item as they are very unique and inexpensive. People rarely throw these away so your customer’s message is long lasting. Other popular items include magnets, fly swatters, flyers, rulers, pencils or pens. Warmer climates such as Florida or Texas need to consider that the fairs are usually held earlier in the year.
JULY
Back-to-school. This is a great back to school opportunity for businesses to promote to parents and children. For example, retailers can hand out rulers, erasers or pencils to children at the check out counters the week before school starts. These are practical school supplies and parents appreciate the gift to their children. This works well for clothing or shoe stores, restaurants and even hardware stores. Other items, like school kits, could be promoted as a gift with a purchase or donated to schools.
AUGUST
Fire Prevention starts the first week of October. We see a tremendous amount of business from fire departments that hand out material to school children and parents. We produce thousands of pencils, rulers, crayons, ovensticks and school packets with fire safety messages. Also keep in mind Bus Safety and Police Departments. Police departments also travel to schools to talk with children about programs like “Stranger Danger,” “No Violence” and “Say No to Drugs.”
Football Season. Businesses can support their local High School or College Teams with promotional donations. Donate stadium cups to snack shops with the school’s name and mascot on one side and the business’ message on the back. Thermal Mugs could be resold at a slightly higher price with offers of free coffee refills. Hand Fans are very good item to show support of a team and to print their schedule. Use the slogan “I’m a Fan of…” Ice scrapers can even be a clever giveaway. One winter a local radio station gave out ice scrapers titled “Seat Scrapers” prior to a Buffalo Bills game!
SEPTEMBER
Halloween and Election Day are right around the corner. For Halloween, AAkron offers several specially designed Halloween pencils. Pencils are useful gifts to hand out to children instead of sweets, and the advertising message is carried into the home. We have also produced rulers, erasers and crayons with Halloween messages. For Election time we offer several political items such as rulers, yardsticks, hand fans, pens and pencils. All inexpensive ways to get political messages across to the voters.
In the colder states start selling Ice Scrapers! Winter will be coming soon and businesses should be prepared with a promotion for the first snowfall. Banks, credit unions, car dealers or rental agencies, restaurants, etc. should hand out ice scrapers with the slogans like, “Always Prepared to Meet your Needs” or “We’d be in a Scrape Without You” when the snow flies! Travel agents can use these to market vacation packages to warmer climates. We have even had hotels in the South hand them out to customers returning to cold weather with slogans like “Don’t you wish you were here now!”
OCTOBER
Thanksgiving and the Holidays (Christmas, Hanukah, New Year’s) are an excellent opportunity to thank customers for their business. One large retailer handed out a different item each week of December; pencils, balloons, coloring books and a ruler. Pencils, pens, magnets and letter openers are easy items to hand out at checkout counters. Restaurants, insurance agents, financial institutions, hardware stores and Physicians are other markets where we produced inexpensive thank you’s for their customers during the holiday seasons.
NOVEMBER
Convention time will be starting soon after the first of the year. Home shows, bridal shows, auto & boat shows, etc. Get customers to start planning for these events from pre-show mailings to giveaways at the booth. Boost booth traffic with yardsticks or hand out free pop in imprinted cups or beer steins. Wooden nickels with the “TUIT” design or magnets with a discount offered when brought to a booth are good pre-show mailers.
DECEMBER
Take a break! You will probably be too busy filling last minute holiday orders for procrastinating clients to promote anything! A good example to use the next time you ask them to plan their promotions early!
